California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus Issues Statement on Hateful Comments Targeted Against State Senate Majority Leader

SACRAMENTO, CA — The California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus released the following statement regarding comments made by Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil about the State Senate Majority Leader:

“In solidarity with the Chair of the Latino Caucus, our fellow diversity caucus member, we echo condemnation of the hateful comments targeted against Senator Gonzalez. To associate Majority Leader Lena Gonzalez with the Klu Klux Klan is not only disgusting, but very dangerous.

As elected officials, we are called to hold ourselves to a higher standard. Senator Alvarado-Gil’s abhorrent comments are an embarrassment to that standard and to this institution. Our constituents deserve the best of us, not antics that can lead to serious harm.

The California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus joins in the calls on Senator Alvarado-Gil to publicly apologize to Majority Leader Gonzalez and the people of California for her targeted, hateful behavior.

We stand united alongside Senator Gonzalez and the California Legislative Latino Caucus.”
