California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus Condemns Fatal ICE Shooting, Demand Accountability and End to Secret Police
SACRAMENTO, CA — The California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus released the following statement in response to the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent in Minneapolis during an escalation of federal immigration interference tactic that especially was targeting communities of color:
“Our hearts and prayers first and foremost lie with Renee Nicole Good’s spouse, her child, and her loved ones as they grieve this devastating and senseless loss. Renee Nicole Good was a human being – a member of her community, a partner, and a parent – whose life was taken far too soon at the hands of hate-filled violence. No family, no community, no American should have to endure this kind of tragedy at the hands of those claiming to enforce the law.
Let us be clear about what happened today: ICE agent shot and killed a woman in broad daylight, and federal officials are hiding behind McCarthy-esque propaganda in a blatant scramble to try to justify their abhorrent and violent reign of terror instead of bringing about accountability. This is what happens when Donald Trump unleashes secret police into American cities. Masked, unidentified individuals terrorizing communities and killing bystanders is not public safety – it is authoritarianism.
The California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus not only condemns this tragic attack by ICE agents, but also stands in solidarity with our fellow Diversity Caucuses and the communities most impacted by this violence. When ICE targets people of color and immigrant communities, LGBTQ+ people are inevitably caught in the crosshairs. We will not remain silent while federal agents operate without transparency, oversight, or consequences.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey have rightly rejected ICE’s claim of self-defense and have called for accountability following this killing. Their response underscores what communities across the country are demanding: truth, transparency, and justice.
As our colleagues in the California Latino Legislative Caucus have warned, allowing this killing to go unanswered places everyone at risk. When ICE interventions turn violent and operate in the shadows, no one is safe in America.
California has already taken decisive action to rein in these abuses by banning masked law enforcement, requiring officer identification, and restricting ICE activity in sensitive locations, such as schools and health care facilities. These protections exist because secret policing and unchecked interventions under the guise of enforcement have no place in a democracy. We call on other states across this nation to follow suit in passing such laws in order to prevent another tragedy from happening again.
The message is clear: no secret police in America. We demand accountability, transparency, and justice.”

About the California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus
California’s Legislative LGBTQ Caucus was formed in 2002 to create a forum for California Legislators to discuss issues that affect LGBTQ Californians and to further the goal of equality and justice for all Californians. California became the first state in the United States to officially form a caucus of openly-LBGTQ state legislators and continues to be a leader of progress for all Americans. In 2025, our membership hit a new milestone of 14 members, maintaining its position as one of the largest LGBTQ Caucus in the Nation, and continues to remain strong. Despite tremendous progress and an unprecedented swell of support for the LGBTQ community worldwide, there is still much work to do to protect and uplift the most vulnerable in our community. The LGBTQ Caucus strives to advocate for diversity and inclusion of all people, including differently abled bodies. Our Caucus is working diligently to support LGBTQ leaders that represent our community at the local, state, and federal levels.
